Sean Dower: Artworks and information
Clothes Recycling Video - looping DVD 28 min. 1996
In ‘Clothes Recycling Video’, the artist climbs into a series of clothes recycling containers on the streets of South London.
Whilst concealed, life on the outside continues. Inside each container, a new set of clothes is found and 4 or 5 minutes later,
Dower emerges transformed. The final set of clothes retrieved corresponds to the first set worn, thus the work forms an
endless loop. This work explores the social concept of recycling and while nothing appears to have been altered in the world,
an intangible displacement of identity has nevertheless taken place. The work's individual 'real-time' sequences echo the fact
that, until we linger in one place for some time, we often don't notice underlying patterns of reality. To reflect this, the video
is genarally displayed on a monitor, in an incidental way, to a non-captive, passing audience.
