Automaton was filmed with a motion control rig. The machine is normally used for compositing and special effects in film and Television. Though barely glimpsed in the final work, the machine assumes a performing role as it gracefully tracks around the chromed curves of the drum-kit whilst a mesmerising drum solo unfolds. Commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella, London and first exhibited at Tate Britain as part of ‘Single Shot’, Automaton has since been exhibited at venues in the UK and Ireland.
Stills photography by J. Westover.
